Standards for Mathematics Practice Posters

When the Common Core Math standards were created so were the Standards of Mathematics Practice.  Many of us are aware that the Standards of Math Practice (otherwise known as the SMP's) were developed as a set of behaviors and habits of mind to support great math thinking in our students.

From a student perspective, the language of the SMP's maybe difficult to understand.  I found a great FREE resource to help students better understand what the SMP's mean.  Debbie Waggoner, a Math and Social Studies Instructional Specialist with the Kentucky Department of Education, compiled the elementary SMP's by grade band from the Jordan School District in Utah!

Check out the sample Standards of Mathematics Practice posters below:

These posters are great resources!! I've printed them out for all of the teachers in my school.  I love referencing them during a model lesson or professional development.

Check out a sample SMP bulletin board in my school.

  1. Mr. Elementary, Thanks for posting these great posters. I am a fifth grade teacher and I am trying to find concrete ways to help my students think out loud and to become better writers in math. I like the way these posters can support my students with ways to think and how to use appropriate math language when writing. I think the bulletin board idea is a great way to introduce them.

    1. Thank you for your comment Debbie. I was excited when I found these posters online. They are great visuals and can serve as reminders for students when they are trying to solve problems (ex. explaining your answer, using academic vocabulary, critiquing other students' reasoning, etc.). I glad that they will be helpful in your classroom.

    1. Thank you Abigail. I did not create these posters. All the credit goes to the Jordan School District in Utah. These posters are great because they are very clear and use language that children can understand. They are a great resource to use when teaching the SMPs.
